What Business Intelligence Is
From Business Questions to KPIs
The Anatomy of a Good KPI
How BI Teams Work
Assessment
Every organization has more numbers than it can use and rarely agrees on what the important ones mean. One team's "revenue" excludes returns, another's includes tax, and a meeting stalls arguing about whose number is right instead of what to do next. This course teaches the discipline that fixes that: business intelligence, the practice of turning business goals into a small set of well-defined KPIs, calculating them the same way every time, and presenting them so a decision-maker can act in under a minute. It is the first course of the Business Intelligence path, and it works from the same fictional retailer, Trailhead Outfitters, used throughout the path, so the numbers you calculate here are the ones later courses turn into a data warehouse, a dashboard and an automated report.
Every lesson follows the same rhythm: a short, real situation that shows why the idea matters, a precise explanation next to a plain-words version, a code demo you run yourself in Google Colab or Jupyter, a few exercises with hints, and a summary of what to remember. The printed output in every lesson comes from running the code against the real Trailhead data, so what you see on the page is what you get on your own screen. Nothing needs installing beyond a free notebook environment, and no account, key or payment is required anywhere in the course.
You work throughout on one shared, fictional business, the outdoor gear retailer Trailhead Outfitters, using the same customer, product and order data that the rest of the Business Intelligence path builds on. That continuity means the KPI definitions you write in this course are not a throwaway exercise: later courses in the path turn them into a real data model and a real dashboard.
Short lessons that move from what business intelligence is, through defining and calculating KPIs, to assembling a readable scorecard and placing your work inside the wider BI stack, plus a closing guided project. You also get the Trailhead customer, product and order data, starter and solution notebooks with self-checks for the project, and a quiz drawn from a question bank at the end of every module.
If you have ever sat in a meeting where two people argued about whose "revenue" number was correct, this course teaches you to prevent that argument before it starts. It suits analysts who already know some pandas or SQL and want to move into BI-specific work, and it suits marketing, operations and finance staff who read dashboards every week and want to understand how the numbers behind them are actually built and what to trust. No BI background is required, and this course is free to start, so there is nothing holding you back. By the end you will have defined, calculated and documented a real KPI scorecard for a real (if fictional) business, something you can describe in an interview or adapt directly to your own team. Enroll now, open the first lesson, and stop arguing about numbers and start trusting them.
